For the first time, Hawaii-based Aloha Medical Mission (AMM) through its president, Ramon K. Sy, chose the Foundation to be their coordinating body for their medical mission in Silay City last November 8-12, 2004. Over 50 AMM volunteers, both U.S. and Philippine-based, arrived last November 7, 2004. On their first night, they were treated to a barrio fiesta-themed reception by Silay City Mayor Carlo V. Gamban and his wife, alumna Maridel Ordoñez-Gamban at the historic Balay Negrense. For the next 5 days, the AMM volunteers were joined by local doctors, nurses, midwives, nursing students, SSA-B alumnae and students as they performed major surgeries and cataract operations at the Dr. Jose Locsin Memorial Provincial Hospital and minor surgeries and medical consultations at the Silay Civic Center. The beneficiaries came from the cities of Silay, Talisay and La Carlota and the municipalities of Murcia and E.B. Magalona. This medical mission far exceeded the AMM’s target number of beneficiaries as they were able to perform medical services as follows:

Total Beneficiaries: 4,625

A farewell dinner reception was hosted by Negros Occidental Governor Joseph G. Marañon at the Provincial Capitol Building last November 12, 2004. The La Carlota City Pasalamat Drumbeaters performed for the guests as they arrived at the reception and during the party. The invocation, the Philippine and American national anthems, and the Negros Hymn were sang by the Provincial Capitol choir. The Silay Rondalla played during dinner. After dinner, the Senior students of SSA-B performed their award-winning “Ragragsakan” native dance. This was followed by a hula number by the Garma sisters, Merlinda & Toni, AMM volunteers from Hawaii. After the presentation of plaques and certificates of appreciation both by the Foundation (led by AMM and the AMM, Governor Marañon gave a toast and presented tokens of appreciation to the AMM and the Foundation. The AMM volunteers then sang a beautiful Hawaiian song “Aloha Oe.” The Foundation reciprocated by giving an accomplishment report of the recently concluded AMM through an audio-visual presentation given by alumna volunteer Mai Magadia-Paltriguera and prepared by Foundation board member Agnes Tinsay-Jalandoni, Kim Javier and photographer Jaime Unson. The audio-visual presentation touched the hearts of everyone present and elicited a warm applause from the audience. The Foundation gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the following individuals and organizations, without whom this medical mission would not have been possible: the AMM, AMM president Dr. Ramon K. Sy, Mayor Carlo V. Gamban of Silay City, Mayor Anthony V. Lizares of Talisay City, Mayor Jeffrey P. Ferrer of La Carlota City, Mayor Esteban H.
